About residencies:
Of the thousands of people that I have worked with to create 50 plus community mosaics, there have only been a handful of them that have ever worked with glass before. So we spend a great deal of time just learning to use tools. In some projects, the participants are only creating tiles.
Some projects they make tiles and also assemble the mosaic, and some are assembled by me. The projects range in time from 5 days to over a year, not including planning time. Each individual tile maker has a different level of capability.
As you would guess, a three year old has a different skill set than a high school student. But we’re also working with special needs too.
I have done projects that are all grade school students, I’ve done one in a max security prison (not allowed to use glass in that one.) One project was with mentally ill adults. Most have been in schools so the people working on the mosaic change every 50 minutes.
